Dragon and Slave, by Timothy Zahn
Dragon and Slave is the latest in the Dragonback series by Timothy Zahn.
In this installment, Jack and Draycos infiltrate a slave broker's estate in order to continue tracking down the mercenary group hired to destroy Draycos' people. The clock is ticking, too, as in three months the rest of Dracos' people will arrive at a secret rendezvous, expecting to find safety. Instead, they'll find this mercenary group waiting for them.
This book has a similar mechanic to Dragon and Soldier, where Jack takes on a role to infiltrate a location in order to gain access to their computer systems. In this case, the location is a slave broker's estate, and the role is that of a skilled slave. This book continues the morality conflict between Jack's upbringing and Draycos' warrior ethic. We see Jack's growth in this book as he starts to care about the other slaves in the estate, and must decide whether to help them, or focus on his own mission.
Fans of the previous books will find more of the same in this one. A fun, fast read that's entertaining. If you found the previous books to be lacking in some way, you'll probably have the same complaint about this one. My only complaint is that the next book in the series isn't due out for a few months yet!
